Es catedrático Robert Woods Bliss de Historia y Economía de América Latina, así como de Estudios Afroamericanos. Es director del Afro Latin American Research Institute de la Universidad de Harvard. Es autor de Diago: The Pasts of This Afro Cuban Present (2017), Havana and the Atlantic in the Sixteenth Century (2008) y A Nation for All: Race, Inequality, and Politics in Twentieth-Century Cuba (2001).
